The Uses of Seashells in Black Magic By RAVEN RIDER

Long before fancy new-age tools became readily available, our ancestors had turned to nature to obtain magical power. They discovered some natural objects that are imbued with spiritual energies that enhance spells and charms.

Seashells are powerful natural objects associated with the various sea gods and goddesses of different culture. These objects were added to wiccan altars to create a connection with the sea gods.

In magical practices, seashells are used for protection, love, prosperity, healing and other spells.

General Uses of Seashells

Protection:

Shells are used in preparing protection amulets because of its strong protective energies. You can protect the house by placing chains of shells on doors and windows.

You can use them as pendants for protection against negative entities or tie a small round shell on the necks of your pets to keep them safe.

Love:

Shells are used in love spells and on jewelries to attract the opposite sex. It is also used to produce powerful talisman to keep two lovers together.

Prosperity

In Africa, shells are used as a form of currency and for this reason they are suitable for money spells. You can hang seashells at your business location to attract customers or place them in your wallet to continuously attract money to it.

Decoration:

Shells are sometimes cut into thin slices and used to decorate headdresses, pendants, bowls, magical wands and other objects. A shell-covered box or mirror could be a lovely tool for a water witch’s altar.

Shell Spell on Self-Healing:

This spell is done using the power of the moon. If you wish to gain something then perform this spell during a waxing moon but if you wish to dissolve something then perform it during a waning moon.

In this example, we will use the Uruz rune to represent self-healing and this spell should be done by the seaside.

Items Required:

  • Suitable shell,
  • Fine nibbed marker pen,
  • A symbol of your desire (Uruz rune).

Steps:

  • Get a suitable shell from shallow water.
  • Dry thoroughly and draw your suitable symbol on the shell’s surface.
  • Place the shell on

Black Magic: Hoodoo Witches Speak Out on the Appropriation of Their Craft By Gabby Bess

Join in on any 21st-century witchy gathering, and you’ll most likely take part in rituals from all over the world. At the last goddess worship session I attended, we sang in a pastiche of chants and spiritual practices that had wide-ranging origins—Kundalini, Santeria, Japanese Reiki—and at the end of the night they all blended under the muddled banner of “New Age.”

While a lot of modern witchcraft tends to be an amalgamation of practices from varying folk magic traditions, there are some witches who insist on purity. On Tumblr, the earthly world, and beyond, contemporary practitioners of Hoodoo, a folk spirituality with African American roots, are fighting against cultural appropriation of their craft.

Hoodoo, also known as rootwork or conjure, was brought to the Americas by African slaves. Due to its origins, Hoodoo was first a tradition of protection and practicality. “In the era of slavery, questions of security loomed large in African American experience,” writes Yvonne Chireau in Conjure and Christianity in the Nineteenth Century: Religious Elements in African American Magic. “For its part, Conjure spoke directly to the slaves’ perceptions of powerlessness and danger by providing alternative—but largely symbolic—means for addressing suffering. The Conjuring tradition allowed practitioners to defend themselves from harm, to cure their ailments, and to achieve some conceptual measure of control over personal adversity.”

According to the iconic author and folklorist Zora Neale Hurston, who embedded herself in the Hoodoo culture of the South in the 1930s and wrote about its history, the practice itself evolved from a combination of African spirituality and Christian rituals that slaves newly encountered in the Americas. In New Orleans, for example, she writes, rootworkers incorporated altars, holy water, and blessed oils from the Catholic church.

Though Hoodoo itself (not to be confused with Voodoo) stems from an appropriation of sorts, the southern folk magic is still intimately tied to its uniquely African American history. This is particularly apparent in the specific uses for Hoodoo spells, many of which are for security, stemming from the violence and disregard that enslaved blacks endured. Common rituals include carrying “a little bag of garlic and brimstone on the person to safeguard you” and walking backward into your house and then forward to ensure that no one will harm you, Hurston writes in Hoodoo in America. Today, this manifests in reblogging sigils—a painted symbol said to have magical powers—like that which circulated on Tumblr among Hoodoo practitioners to protect the people of Ferguson during the unrest following police violence and the killing of Mike Brown in the

Why Are Black Cats Considered Bad Luck? BY KATE ERBLAND

ThinkStock
THINKSTOCK

Feline friends and fans know there is nothing to fear from the world’s most cuddly creatures (sorry, red pandas, corgi puppies, and fluffy bunnies, this is a cat’s world), but the persistence of the pesky belief that black cats are somehow bad luck has endured for centuries. Sure, back during the heyday of Egyptian rule (around 3000 BC), all cats were notoriously honored and worshipped—killing one was even a capital crime—but the rise of good, old-fashioned witchcraft in Europe put the kibosh on any trace of goodwill towards the inkiest of felines, and the all-black brethren are still trying to distance themselves from the bad press of a witchcraft affiliation.

Black cats pop up frighteningly frequently in all sorts of culturally based bits of folklore, and though much of their mythos is actually of the positive variety, Western tradition has so maligned the critters that black cats as bad luck have become something of a given in various circles (at least, that’s what it looks like once Halloween decorations start popping up, “scaredy cats” and all).

The Middle Ages

It seems that the association between bad luck and black cats dates all the way back to the middle of the fourteenth century. It’s not known exactly how and why cats became associated with the Devil in the Middle Ages, but the belief was so persistent that they were all but exterminated during the Black Death pandemic around 1348 CE. (Pause to cry.) Ironically, killing off the cats only worsened the plague, which was often spread via rodents, which all those dearly departed cats could have helped kill. Oopsie!

Scottish Folklore

Scottish folklore includes a fairy known as the Cat Sith, a giant black cat (with a small white spot on his chest) who was believed to have the ability to steal a dead person’s soul before the gods could claim it. That belief led to the creation of night-and-day watches called the “Late Wake” to guard bodies just before burial. The Scottish also employed such tried and true methods as “using catnip” and “jumping around a lot” to scare off potential Cat Sith soul-stealers. (Some things never change, even when you’re dealing with possibly fairy-infused felines.)

The Age of Witchcraft

Blame black magic. As chatter about nefarious witchcraft began to spread around Europe in the sixteenth century, cats (particularly black ones) found themselves tangled up in the hunt, simply because many presumed witches had taken in alley cats as companions. Somehow, the concept of “companion” turned into “familiar,” and the belief that witches could turn themselves into their (typically black) cat companions became

Egg Cleansing: How To Remove Curses With An Egg

Egg Cleansing: How to remove a curse with an egg

Today’s post in on removing curses from yourself by passing an egg over your body, with a method known as egg cleansing, limpia de huevo or limpia de los huevos (it means egg cleansing in Spanish) or simply limpia.

Eggs have various uses in magic.

They can be used in container spells, for protection and to deliver curses as well as to remove curses.

There are also egg spells for love and egg spells used in black magic (whatever the term may mean to you).

Today I’m going to show you how to remove a curse from yourself or another person using an egg.

The process is known as an egg cleansing, limpia de los huevos (it means eggs cleansing in Spanish) or simply limpia.

Many others know this process as Mexican cleansing ritual or Mexican egg ritual. It’s also widely used in the hoodoo tradition.

It is very easy to perform and you can do it on yourself, another person, even a pet (you may want to avoid the incense in that case though).

I once was called to perform an egg cleansing on someone’s dog.

The dog was very old but was in great health until one day her owner woke up and found it lying there, unable to walk. The vet said it’s just old age, there was nothing he could do and that she would pass soon (she wasn’t eating much either).

While the dog was indeed very old, she had been in great health and very energetic and the symptoms were very sudden and unexpected, which is why the owner suspected that a magical attack directed at her was absorbed by her dog instead.

I performed the egg cleansing and as we headed towards the kitchen right afterward the dog suddenly jumped up and followed us, when 20 minutes earlier she had been completely unable to stand.

When we broke the egg, it had several black spots as well as spots of blood in it.

After the cleansing, I prepared un uncrossing candle and several protection candles for both the dog and her owner, so that they’d have a protective candle continuously burning. The dog lived for 6 more months without any health issues whatsoever, up until the last 24 hours before her death.

The Easiest Way to Break a Curse or Hex (and Keep It Broken!) By Neal Alan Jansons

What Is a Curse?

A curse is a spell that is targeted directly at a person or place and is meant to cause harm. There are many such spells, but they can be broken down into categories.

  1. The entropy or chaos curse: This spell increases the probability of harm to its target. The harm might range from bad luck to death, but the trademark of this curse is that there is no rhyme or reason to the harm caused—it just results in things generally going wrong. If a whole string of things keep going spectacularly and improbably awry, there is a good chance there is an entropy curse at work.
  2. The binding: This spell causes an inability to act. It may manifest psychologically as depression or anxiety, or it may operate by simply making none of your plans amount to anything. If you find yourself completely unable to act upon your decisions, then you might be under a binding.
  3. The lesson: Some users of magick want to dispense justice, and right or wrong, they are willing to use magick to do it. The specifics of these curses are always retributive and their casters love to “make the punishment fit the crime.” Thus, if the target is a thief, they will be stolen from—and if they are a user, they will be used. If you find yourself suddenly and consistently a victim of “your own medicine,” you might want to look around for a nearby witch with a good-guy badge.
  4. The special-purpose curse: This is a catch-all category for things like “a sending of rats” or the “evil eye.” These spells are usually specific, have a great deal of lore associated with them, and are generally spectacular in their results (there is nothing subtle about your house being infested with dozens of rats). In this case, each spell has its own hallmark signs, but they are all very spectacular. When life starts feeling like a horror movie, you have a special-purpose curse.

Can You Put a Curse on Someone and Not Know It?

Hexes are intentionally malevolent spells. A hex is never accidental and is usually cast by someone with knowledge in witchcraft. Curses, on the other hand, are sometimes less intentional and can be set in motion when someone simply thinks or speaks ill against another.

How Do I Know If I Am Cursed?

People who are simply having a bad time in their lives often think they are the victims of curses. Knowing whether you are really cursed requires some careful self-examination. You must first ask yourself if you are being honest and objective and whether what is happening might just be coincidence or self-sabotage. If you really believe that what is happening might in fact be caused by magick, there are ways to check. If your area has an occult store or local pagan group, you might be able to find help there, or use the simple divination method below. (Note: this method employs the same approach as with a Tarot deck, but uses a normal deck of playing cards. If you want to use Tarot cards, you can, just remove the Major Arcana and use the same method with the remainder).

  1. Sit down with a deck of playing cards. Take
